چکیده

In this note, we calculate the dissipation due to the tunneling of quasiparticles using the environmental P (E) theory[1] to properly account for coupling to the qubit from the charge transfer. We will first calculate the damping rate for a inductor-capacitor resonator using environmental theory; the prediction for phase qubits, for example, will be similar since qubit and harmonic oscillator matrix elements are nearly identical. We will then consider the tunneling of quasiparticles, which has tunneling of charge carriers that is both electronand hole-like. Standard environmental theory gives a probability P (E) for the environment to absorb energy from a tunneling event with charge transfer q

Energy Gap Reduction in Superconducting Tin Films by Quasiparticle Injection

In Sn-I-Sn-I-Pb tunneling structures the energy gap ~Sn of Sn is reduced by quasiparticle injection via single-particle tunneling between the Sn films. ~Sn as function of the quasiparticle density is probed by the Pb contact and found in agreement with the theory of OWen and Scalapino. An instability of the energy gap of Sn is observed at the critical gap reduction ratio predicted by this theor...

Energy dependence of quasiparticle relaxation in a disordered fermi liquid.

A spectroscopic method is applied to measure the inelastic quasiparticle relaxation rate in a disordered Fermi liquid. The quasiparticle relaxation rate gamma is deduced from the magnitude of fluctuations in the local density of states, which are probed using resonant tunneling through a localized impurity state. We study its dependence on the excitation energy E measured from the Fermi level. ...

The Sinis Turnstile: towards a Quantum Current Standard

In order to create such a standard, we focus on developing a single-electron turnstile based on two mesoscopic normal metal (N) – insulator (I) – superconductor (S) tunnel junctions [2]. Even though the trade-off between missed tunneling and higher-order tunneling processes limits the current of a single device to around 10 30 pA [3], the device is simple enough to be parallelized, and high eno...

Pseudospin transfer torques in semiconductor electron bilayers

We use self-consistent quantum transport theory to investigate the influence of electron-electron interactions on interlayer transport in semiconductor electron bilayers in the absence of an external magnetic field. We conclude that, even though spontaneous pseudospin order does not occur at zero field, interaction-enhanced quasiparticle tunneling amplitudes and pseudospin transfer torques do a...

Quasiparticle Recombination Time of Superconducting Tin Films in a Parallel Magnetic Field

The influence of a parallel magnetic field on the quasiparticle recombination time of superconducting tin tunneling junctions has been determined experimentally. The results are compared with the predictions of a theoretical model that takes into account the modification of the quasiparticle density of states by the applied magnetic field.
